Box Score 2 After multiple postponements at Klenk Park because of field conditions due to the harsh winter, the Alma College baseball team finally played a home game. The Scots took on Adrian College in the Saturday afternoon doubleheader and the rain held off for at least one game.
In the opener, the Bulldogs broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the sixth and held on for the 5-3 victory. With the loss, Alma fell to 8-5 in the MIAA and 14-9 overall, while Adrian improved to 11-2 in the league and 17-7 for the 2014 season.
Game two started and made it until the bottom of the fourth inning before the lightning, rain and hail forced a suspension of the contest. Adrian leads 2-0 when the teams resume on Sunday. The conclusion will begin at 1:00 p.m. before the beginning of the regularily scheduled doubleheader.
Game 1
In the top of the third inning, the Bulldogs led off with two singles against Alma starting Sr. P Kevin Thompson (Petoskey/Petoskey) and the runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.
Adrian followed the bunt with a single that scored a run and put runners at first and third. The next batter then was able to hit a fly ball just deep enough to score the runner from third for a 2-0 lead.
Alma responded right away in their half of the third frame.
After a ground out to start the inning, Alma got singles by Fr. SS Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills/Detroit Central Catholic) and Sr. LF Alex Kravat (Auburn/Bay City Western). That was followed by Jr. RF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris) getting hit by a pitch to load the bases.
A subsequent strikeout gave Alma two outs as the bases remained loaded. Jr. DH Juan Dominguez (New York/NY/Blue Ridge) saved the rally however by lining a double down the left field line that cleared the bases and gave the Scots a 3-2 advantage.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth as the Scots committed three errors that led on an unearned run. The contest would then remain tied until the top of the sixth.
Facing Alma relief pitcher So. Philip Jock (Wales/Memphis), the Bulldogs tallied two runs (one earned) and took a 5-3 advantage in their half of the sixth. Two walks and a balk set up the rally before the single and an error pushed the runs across.
The Scots had runners on base in each of their halves of the sixth and seventh inning but could not get any runs to cut into the deficit. Adrian was able to get the final six outs and earn the two-run victory.
Thompson pitched 4.2 innings and gave up eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts, while Jock took the loss in one inning of work. So. P Blake Ordiway (Holly/Holly) pitched a final scoreless inning.
At the plate, Kravat led the way with three hits, while Peczynski added two hits of his own in the loss.
