Box Score 2 On a picturesque spring afternoon, the Alma College Baseball team traveled to Nicolay Field on the campus of Adrian College to take on Olivet College in a doubleheader on Monday. The Scots claimed victory in both games of the twinbill, 5-4 and 6-4.
With the wins, Alma improves to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. The Comets drop to 2-12 on the year and 0-6 in the league with the loss.
Game 1
Following a single and a stolen base, the Comets would get on the board with a one-out single to start the game.
Fr. IF Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills/Detroit Catholic Central) led off the first with a single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jr. IF Juan Dominguez (New York, NY/Blue Ridge) followed and smacked a triple to score Pezynski from second. Sr. IF Alex Kravat (Auburn/Bay City Western) laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring in Dominquez from third, to give the Scots the 2-1 lead on Monday afternoon.
Olivet was unable to manufacture any runs in the second and the score remained 2-1 heading into the home portion of the inning.
Jr. IF Jose Rosado (Corona, NY/Bryant) led off the second with a walk but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice. So. OF David Carles (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) reached on the fielder's choice then stole second and third base. Sr. IF Bryan Goostrey (Jackson/East Jackson) reached first on a walk, and So. C A.J. Acton (Temecula, CA/Linfield Christian) followed by getting hit by a pitch to give Alma two men on with two outs. Peczynski ended the inning by doubling in Carles to stretch the Scots' advantage to 3-1.
The score remained 3-1 until the fifth inning, when Jr. OF Blake Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley) flied out to center to bring in Dominquez from third.
The Scots shut out Olivet in the sixth and the score stayed 4-1 heading into the home half of the inning. Peczynski led off the bottom of the fifth by getting hit my a pitch and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a walk by Jr. OF Yoan Delrosa (Bronx, NY/Morris), Dominquez got beaned to load the bases for Alma. An error by the Comets scored Peczynski from third to extend the Scots' advantage to 5-1.
Olivet would load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. The Comets scored on an error and then a double to bring home two more runs. With the score at 5-4, So. P Philip Jock (Wales/Memphis) was brought in the game with two outs to close the door on Olivet. The sophomore would strike out the only batter he faced to seal the 5-4 victory for the Scots in game one.
Alma finished the first game with five runs on five hits, six walks and left eight runners on base.
Peczynski and Dominquez both recorded two hits and one RBI for Alma. So. C Doug Walters (Brighton/Brighton) added the other RBI on Monday afternoon.
On the mound, Jr. P Eric Strickler (Lapeer/Lapeer East) got his first win of the season, giving up four runs (one earned) on six hits in 6.2 innings pitched.
Game 2
Olivet was unable to land any baserunners in the first, and the score stayed 0-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.
With two outs, Leddy connected on a double to left center to give the Scots their first runner of game two. Kravat would single to score Leddy from second, to give Alma the 1-0 lead after one.
The Comets would put three on the board in the second to take the 3-1 lead.
Goostrey got hit by a pitch to give Alma one man on with two outs in the second. Acton singled and Pezynski walked to load the bases. Rosado would get walked to score Goostrey from third. Leddy followed with a walk to score Acton and tie the score at 3-3.
Olivet would be unable to manufacture any runs in the third and the score stayed knotted at 3-3.
In the third, Dominquez reached on an error and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Delrosa would be intentionally walked and Goostrey followed with a single to score Dominquez from third. Acton smacked a double to left center to score Goostrey and Delrosa to give Alma the 6-3 advantage after three.
Both teams struggled at the plate in the third, and the score remained 6-3 going into the top of the sixth. Olivet scored on an error in the sixth, to cut the deficit to 6-4.
The Scots left two men on in the bottom of the sixth and the score stayed at 6-4 heading into the top of the seventh.
The Comets recorded a two-out single to land a baserunner in the final frame. The runner would advance to second on a balk, but Olivet would be unable to advance him any further and Alma claimed game two, 6-4.
Alma finished game two with six hits, five walks and eight left on base.
Acton and Leddy both collected two hits, with Acton chipping in two RBI's. Leddy, Kravat, Rosado and Goostrey each added a RBI on Monday evening.
So. P Colin Nash (Brighton/Brighton) got the win for Alma, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits, while striking out five. So. P Blake Ordiway (Holly/Holly) collected his first save of the season after allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings pitched.
