Box Score The Alma College Baseball team traveled to the campus of Davenport University on Sunday to take on Kalamazoo College at the Farmers Athletic Complex. The Scots showed serious heart on Sunday night, erasing a three-run deficit in the sixth to force the game into extra innings. Despite a two-run tenth, Alma would fall to Kalamazoo 6-5 on Sunday.
With the loss, the Scots drop to 6-5 overall with a 0-1 record in the MIAA. The Hornets improve to 4-8 on the year and 2-2 in league matches with the win.
Following a leadoff triple, Kalamazoo would get on the board first with a single to left center.
Sr. IF Alex Kravat (Auburn/Bay City Western) was hit by a pitch to start the second inning to give Alma its first baserunner of the evening. Sr. IF Bryan Goostrey (Jackson/East Jackson) would follow with a single to center field to give the Scots two men on with two outs. A groundout to the shortstop ended the second inning for Alma, leaving two runners on base.
The Hornets would get another run in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 2-0.
The game would remain 2-0 until Kalamazoo scored on a single in the fifth to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Pinch hitting, Fr. IF Jeremiah Johnson (Bloomingdale/Bloomingdale) started off the sixth inning with a single to right center. Fr. IF Alex Peczynski (Farmington Hills/Detroit Catholic Central) followed with a single to right field to give the Scots two men on with no outs. Jr. IF Juan Dominguez (New York, NY/Blue Ridge) smacked a single to center field to score Johnson and Peczynski crossed home after an error by the Hornets. Dominguez would score thanks to a groundout by Kravat and Alma ended the sixth even with Kalamazoo 3-3.
The score stayed locked at 3-3 heading into the ninth inning. The Scots only managed one hit in the ninth so the game remained tied heading into the home half of the inning. So. P Philip Jock (Wales/Memphis), who was brought in for relief in the seventh, pitched a nearly perfect ninth - striking out three of the five batters he faced. With the game still tied up, they headed to extras in Caledonia.
The Alma bats were hot in the 10th inning, with Johnson and Peczynski leading off the inning with two singles. Dominguez whacked a two-out single to center to score Johnson and advance Peczynski to third. Peczynski would later score on a wild pitch to give the Scots the 5-3 lead.
The Hornets would respond in a big way, scoring three in the final frame to secure the 6-5 victory on Sunday evening.
Peczynski led Alma would three hits, while Johnson and Dominquez both added two. Dominquez led the team with two RBI's and Kravat added one in the loss.
On the mound, Sr. P Kevin Thompson (Petoskey/Petoskey) allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven in 6.1 innings pitched. Jock recorded eight strikeouts while allowing three runs on three hits in 3.0 innings worked. Jr. P Eric Strickler (Lapeer/Lapeer East) came in the game in the 10th and got the loss to drop to 0-2 on the year.
Alma left Davenport University with 10 hits, five runs and three RBI's, while leaving six runners on base.
The game on Sunday was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader but the second game got postponed. No makeup for this postponement has been announced yet.
The Scots are back in action tomorrow, March 31st, when they take on Olivet in a doubleheader at Adrian College at 3:00 p.m.
