Box Score The Alma Men's Basketball team finished play at the Calvin Tournament on Saturday afternoon by taking on a senior-laden Waynesburg University (PA) team inside of the Van Noord Arena. The Scots would drop the contest to the Yellow Jackets 82-78 to leave Grand Rapids with an 0-2 record over the weekend.
Alma drops to 0-4 on the year with the loss, while Waynesburg, picked to finish second in their league, improves to 1-3 with the victory.
"We really battled today," said Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "I am very proud of our effort against a team that is a very veteran, physical and well coached squad and one that is picked to finish high in their conference. We can really build from this."
So. G Chase Fairchild (Rockford/Rockford) put the Scots on the board first on Saturday, sinking a triple off an assist by So. F Tyler Edwards (Swartz Creek/Swartz Creek) to give Alma the early 3-0 lead. Another three, this time by Jr. F DJ Beckman (Shelby/Shelby), put the Scots up 10-7 at 16:32 - this would be the last time Alma held the lead in the first half.
The Yellow Jackets would attempt to take control in the last minutes of the half, opening up a 12-point lead with just under three minutes to play.
The Scots would cut the deficit to eight before halftime, to head into the locker rooms down 40-32.
Alma was focused on taking the lead back in the second half, fighting back from eight points down to take the 48-47 lead with 13:30 remaining the regulation.
The Scots extended the lead to five at 12:37, before a 10-0 Yellow Jacket run would give Waynesburg the 59-54 advantage with just over 10 minutes to play.
The Yellow Jackets held a comfortable lead for the next few minutes before Fr. G Jason Beckman (Shelby/Shelby) drained a three to bring Alma within two at 79-77, with just 11 seconds on the clock.
The Scots would be forced to foul with just one second remaining, and Waynesburg would connect on both free throws to leave Grand Rapids with the 82-78 victory.
DJ Beckman recorded a double-double on Saturday, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Fairchild led the Scots with 24 points and Jr. G Scott Nikodemski (Rockford/Rockford) was not far behind, scoring 23 points while dishing out a team-high seven assists.
Alma shot 44% (24-of-54) from the field and 33% (11-of-33) from beyond the arc. The Scots bench was outscored 24-11 and Alma committed 18 turnovers, while forcing 15.
The Scots will travel to Detroit on Wednesday, November 26, where they will host the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (WI) at the Palace of Auburn Hills in the Detroit Pistons Court of Dreams Event at 2:30 p.m.
