Alma Volleyball goes 2-0 at tri-match hosted by Manchester University on Saturday

The Alma College Volleyball team hit the road on Saturday, heading to the state of Indiana to participate in a tri-match hosted by Manchester College (IN). The Scots left The Hoosier State with two victories on Saturday, defeating Mount St. Joseph University (OH) and the host Spartans 3-1. 

Alma improves to 13-14 overall with the two victories on Saturday and will host MIAA-foe Olivet College on Friday, Oct. 17, with the match set to start at 6:30 p.m.                         

Match One: Mount St. Joseph University (OH)

The Scots found themselves down 3-0 early in the first set before stringing four-straight points together to take the 4-3 lead in set one. Following a tie at 5-5, Alma would take control of the first set and take the win 25-16.

The Scots would keep the momentum going in the second set, scoring first on a kill by So. MH Madison Smith (Westphalia/Pewamo-Westphalia) off an assist by So. S Mary Dulzo (Novi/Mercy). Alma would lead for the remainder of the set and take set two 25-20.

The Lions would respond in the third set, downing the Scots 25-15.

Alma bounced back in the fourth set and was dominant throughout. Mount St. Joseph would end the set with an error to give the Scots the 3-1 match victory at the Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.

Smith ed the Scots with 10 kills while adding four block assists. Dulzo and So. OH Maressa Miller (Grand Blanc/Grand Blanc) both chipped in 16 assists while Jr. OH Hannah Guilford (Hartland/Hartland) led the way with 10 digs.

Match Two: Manchester University (IN)

Despite being the perceived underdog in the match, the host Spartans came out and took the first set 25-23 to go up 1-0 on their home floor.

The Scots would quickly recover and take the second set in convincing fashion 25-16 to tie the score at 1-1.

Alma kept the pressure up in set three and a kill by So. OH Sasha Laykova (Ternopil, Ukraine/Forest Hills Northern) from Miller would seal the win 25-15 to put the visitors up 2-1 in the match.

The Scots would find themselves playing catch up for most of the fourth set. Alma would close out the match on an amazing 9-1 run to take the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.

Smith and Laykova each had 11 kills for Alma, with Laykova adding seven digs. Dulzo led the way with 20 assists and So. DS Molly Lark (Middleville/Thornapple-Kellogg) added a team-high 15 digs.
