Volleyball beaten 3-1 by host Heidelberg (6-25, 25-16, 9-25, 19-25)

Box Score

The Alma College volleyball team hit the road Saturday and fell to Heidelberg University 3-1 (6-25, 25-16,9-25,19-25) in a non-conference match up. With the loss, the Scots fall to 8-8 overall and Heidelberg improves to 7-9.

"After a long trip down today, we started a little slow in set one," said Scots Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "The fact that we were able to rebound and play some fantastic volleyball against a tough Heidelberg team in set two showed a lot of pride. Set three the team second guessed their abilities again and played as individuals before regaining their confidence and focus in set four. The final set was a battle from the start with a few bad calls, but we fought back and fought to the end.

"I am hoping that we can learn from this and know that we can beat anyone, but we can also lose to anyone if we give them the game."

The Student Princes jumped out to an early 10-0 advantage in the first set and never looked back, defeating the Scots 25-6.

Alma would bounce back in the second set, and take the early 9-4 advantage. A kill by Fr. MH/OH Madison Smith (Westphalia/Pewamo-Westphalia) would give the Scots their biggest lead of the set at 19-11. A kill by So. OH/DS Hannah Guilford (Hartland/Hartland) would give the Scots the second-set victory, 25-16.

Despite having momemtum in its favor, Alma would drop the next two sets (9-25, 19-25) and lose the match 3-1.

Sr. MH Rebecca Trosper (Plano, TX/Lutheran North) led the way for Alma with eight kills and classmate S Erika VanHavel (Mason/Mason) added a team-high 12 assists. Jr. OH/DS Laura Walker (Roscommon/Roscommon) finished with a team-high 12 digs while Fr. S Mary Dulzo (Novi/Mercy) contributed 10.

Amber Welfle notched a double-double for Heidelberg, finishing with 12 kills and 11 digs. Sarah Parker recorded a team-high 14 kills and Alexa Frank paced the attack with 23 assists.

As a team, Alma finished with 36 kills, 32 assists and 56 digs while recording a .077 hitting percentage. Conversly, Heidelberg had 48 kills, 45 assists and 55 digs while hitting at a .311 clip.
