Box Score The Alma College Volleyball team hosted Kalamazoo College on Tuesday night in an important early season contest at Art Smith Arena. The Scots defeated the Hornets 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19) in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play.
Sr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) dished out a season-high 18 assists and with the win, the Alma College volleyball team improved to 7-6 overall with a 2-3 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, the Hornets dropped to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in league action.
"We had a slow start after a long weekend with tough opponents," said Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "But, we managed to hold it together and get the three set win. Now we have a few days to get ready to play at Albion on Friday."
Fr. OH/DS Sasha Laykova (Ternopil, Ukraine/Forest Hills Northern) led the way for the Scots with nine kills and five service aces while also adding six digs on Tuesday. Sr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) recorded eight kills and Fr. S Mary Dulzo (Novi, Mich./Mercy) had 14 assists to go along with her team-high eight digs in the victory.
Kaela Van Til led the Hornets with six kills and Alex Gothard added a team-high 13 assists in the loss.
As a team, Alma finished with 37 kills on 103 total attacks (.117), 37 assists and 39 digs. Conversely, Kalamazoo had just 17 kills on 77 total attacks (-.013), 14 assists and 33 digs.
The Scots return to action on Friday, Sep. 20, when they travel to Albion, Mich. to take on Albion College at 6:30 p.m
