Box Score 2 On Saturday, the Alma College Volleyball team played two matches to conclude the Purple Raider Classic at Mt. Union University in Alliance, Ohio. The Scots defeated Transylvania 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-20, 27-25) in the morning affair and lost to John Carroll University 3-0 (22-25, 16-25, 18-25) in the finale.
Today's split gave Alma a record of 2-2 in the tournament and the Scots are now 6-6 overall in 2013.
"We beat Transylvania, who I thought was the second-best team we played this weekend, in four set this morning and then lost to John Carroll," said Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "We came out flat after our break and gave them huge leads in each set. We would chip our way back, but couldn't quite get a W. Once they challenged us back, we lost our confidence and energy and that is what helps us win."
Against Transylvania, Alma was led by Sr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison), who had seven kills and a team-high 14 digs. So. OH/DS Hannah Guilford (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) finished with 11 digs and 10 kills.
In the loss to John Carroll, Sr. MH Rebecca Trosper (Plano, Tex./Lutheran North) had nine kills and four digs, while Klooster added eight kills, three assists and three digs. Sr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) had a team-high 16 assists and added eight digs, and Fr. S Mary Dulzo (Novi, Mich./Mercy) contributed seven assists and a team-best 12 digs.
The Scots continue action on Tuesday evening, when they host Kalamazoo College at Art Smith Arena. Match time is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
