Box Score 2 On Friday, the Alma hit the road for the final two games of the season and took on Albion College in a doubleheader. The Scots won both contests - the first game by a score of 18-8 and the nightcap by 6-5.
The Scots finished their 2013 campaign with an overall record of 16-21 and 12-16 in the MIAA, while the Britons concluded their season with a 14-25 final record and 10-18 in the league.
Alma scored a single run in the first that was followed by two Albion runs in the bottom of the frame. The Scots then responded with four in the second with the big hit being a two-RBI double by So. OF Blake Leddy (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley). Albion responded with two in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-4 Alma lead.
The Scots then exploded for 13 runs on 14 hits in the next two innings to increase their advantage to an impressive 18-4 mark. The Britons added four of their own in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit. However, it was not nearly enough as the the Scots held on for the final 18-8 margin of victory.
Alma had 24 hits in the win and were led by several players who had multiple hits. Fr. CF John Mireles (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) was three for four with four runs scored, three RBI's and a double. So. DH Jose Velez (Tampa, Fla./N. Ft. Myers) went three for four with two runs and two RBI's and Leddy finished two for two with three RBI's and a double. Sr. Cameron Schmidt (Port Austin, Mich./N. Huron) was three for five with two runs, three RBI's and a double.
On the mound, Jr. P Kevin Thompson (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) pitched five innings to pick up the win and improve to 5-0 on the season. He allowed four hits with four earned runs. Sr. P Mitch Wilson (Rudyard, Mich./Rudyard) and Sr. P Alex Ruhlman (Ira, Mich./Algonac) each pitched one inning in the game.
In the nightcap, each team scored a run in the second inning and the third frame was followed by Alma scoring one and Albion two for a 3-2 lead. The Britons added two more in the fourth and led 5-2 heading into the top of the fifth.
Alma answered with three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. Jr. IF Alex Kravat (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) walked and So. OF Mostafa Ghonim ((E. Elmhurst, NY/Bryant) followed with a single.
With one out, Leddy singled in Kravat with the first run and So. IF Jose Rosado (Corona, NY/Bryant) followed with a sacrifice fly for a run. The finaly tally came on a single by Jr. IF Bryan Goostrey (Jackson, Mich./East Jackson).
After Albion went scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, Alma recorded the game-winner in the top of the sixth inning. Mireles singled and stole second to put himself in scoring range. Ghonim then followed with a single that would prove to be the winning run at 6-5.
The Britons did not score in two innings of off So. P Eric Strickler (Lapeer, East Lapeer), who pitched two innings for his eighth save of the season. He allowed just one hit and had two strikeouts.
Fr. P Colin Nash (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) started for Alma and went 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits, five earned runs and three walks. Velez then threw one inning and allowed a hit, four walks and a strikeout. Fr. P Blake Ordiway (Holly, Mich./Holly) threw .2 of an inning and recorded the win to improve to 2-2.
Goostrey led the team in the batters box by going three for four with an RBI, while Leddy finished two for four with two runs and two RBI's. Ghonim was two for two with the run and RBI and Mireles added two hits and two runs.
