Baseball drops two contests at Trine University

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Saturday afternoon saw the Alma College Baseball team travel to Trine University for a MIAA doubleheader on a sunny but windy day in Angola, Ind. The Scots dropped both games to the Thunder by scores of 3-2 and 5-2 and now have a league record of 1-7 and 5-12 overall. Trine improved to 6-4 in the MIAA and 10-9 in 2013.

In game one, the Thunder scored in the bottom of the first inning on a single and double off of Alma starting Fr. P Colin Nash (Brighton, Mich./Brighton). The Scots scratched back in their half of the second inning.

So. 2B Jose Rosado (Corona, NY/Bryant) reached base on an error and moved to third on a single by Jr. LF Alex Kravat (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western). Rosado then scored on an infield out by Fr. CF John Mireles (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) to make it a 1-1 game.

Trine answered right away with two of their own in the bottom of the second inning and it looked to be one of those high scoring affairs. The Thunder capitalized on a lead-off error and added a bunt single to get runners on second and third. A double by Carter Stafford knocked in two runs, giving the home team a 3-1 lead.

Both pitchers settled down from there and the game settled into a well played defensive affair. The Scots made it interesting however in the top of seventh inning. A walk by Sr. PH Cameron Schmidt (Port Austin, Mich./North Huron) led off the frame and with one out, Sr. SS Ryan Henris (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic) singled putting runners on first and second.

A sacrifice bunt moved both runners over with two outs and then So. DH Jose Velez (Tampa, Fla./South Fort Myers) reached on an error scoring Schmidt and moving Henris to third. Velez then stole second as the Scots really made it interesting. However, Rosado flew out to end the inning and game, with Alma falling by a score of 3-2.

Nash threw a complete game in the loss, allowing six hits in six innings with one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts. Henris finished the game three for four from the plate to lead the Scots.

In the nightcap, the Scots again fell behind to the Thunder as the home team scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning off of Alma starting So. P Roderick MacNeil (Brethren, Mich./Brethren). The big hit for Trine was a two-out triple after a defensive error that could have ended the frame.

The Thunder scored a single run in the home half of the third inning on two walks and an errant pickoff attempt to take a 4-0 advantage. In the top of the fourth, the Scots struck for two runs and four hits to cut the deficit to 4-2. Kravat and So. PH Blake Leddy (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) each had RBI singles for Alma in the inning.

The home team closed out the game's scoring with a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the decisive 5-2 advantage. Trine's run came off one hit and a sacrifice fly that scored the runner.

On the mound, MacNeil took the loss after three innings of work as he allowed two hits, one earned run and had three walks with one strikeout. Fr. P Blake Ordiway (Holly, Mich./Holly) pitched one inning, allowing one hit and one earned run, while So. P Eric Strickler (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East) threw the final two innings with no runs and two strikeouts.

Mireles finished two for three with a run scored at the plate, while Velez, Kravat, Leddy and Sr. 3B Matthew Cresswell (St. Louis, Mich./St. Louis) each had one hit. The RBI's came from Kravat and Leddy.

Alma will host Trine tomorrow afternoon for another league doubleheader, this time at Klenk Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
