Alma Baseball traveled to Hope College on Saturday for a doubleheader

The Alma College Baseball team traveled to Holland on Saturday afternoon to take on Hope College in a MIAA doubleheader. The two teams split as Alma won game one 6-4 and the Flying Dutchmen bounced back for a 8-5 victory.

After today's split, the Scots are now 7-14 in the MIAA and 11-19 overall, while Hope finished the day at 17-7 in the league and 23-12 in 2013.

In game one, Hope jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off of Alma starting Jr. P Kevin Thompson (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) before the Scots answered with one of their own in the top of the second.

The big inning in the game in the top of the third as the Scots scored four runs on four hits. Fr. CF John Mireles (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) led of with a bunt single and moved to second on a walk by Jr. 1B Alex Kravat (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western). So. 2B Jose Rosado (Corona, NY/Bryant) then doubled, knocking in Mireles and moving Kravat to third.

Kravat scored on a ground out and then So. RF Blake Leddy (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) singled to score two runs and the Scots had a 5-1 advantage. Rosado and So. OF Mostafa Ghonim, who had walked, scored for Alma.

Alma added a single when Ghonim doubled in the top of the fifth and was knocked in by Sr. DH Cameron Schmidt (Port Austin, Mich./North Huron), giving the visitors the 6-1 lead. Hope responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame off of Thompson and the contest became a 6-4 affair.

Neither team scored in the sixth and Alma left one runner on base in the top off the seventh. Hope garnered a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but were not able to score. Alma secured the win as So. P Eric Strickler (Lapeer, Mich./Lepeer East) got the final two outs for the save.

Rosado finished the game two for three from the plate with a run and an RBI, while Schmidt went two for four, a run and two RBI's. Leddy was one for two with his two RBI's.

The nightcap also saw Alma take a early lead in search of the sweep. The Scots scored five runs on four hits and one Hope error in the top of the third for a 5-0 advantage. Alma loaded the bases on a walk and two hit batsmen with one out, paving the way for some key hits.

Kravat singled in one run and that was followed by the second out of the inning. Schmidt then singled to center that knocked in a run and Ghonim followed with a two-RBI single to make it 4-0. Leddy finished the scoring with a single that gave the visitors their fifth run of the inning.

Hope answered with a single run in the bottom of third and the score remained that way until the bottom of fifth inning. The Flying Dutchmen exploded for seven runs on seven hits and one Alma error to take a 8-5 lead. There were six singles and one double in the inning off of Alma starting Fr. P Colin Nash (Brighton, Mich./Brighton).

Neither team would add to their run totals the rest of the way, and the Flying Dutchmen held on for the 8-5 win and a split of the doubleheader.

Nash (0-5) took the loss for the Scots as he went 4.1 innings and allowed 12 hits, eight runs (five earned) and had two walks to go with two strikeouts. Fr. P Blake Ordiway (Holly, Mich./Holly) threw 1.2 innings and gave up one hit and had one strikeout.

The Scots are scheduled to make-up a home doubleheader with Kalamazoo College on Monday afternoon. First pitch at Klenk Park is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
