Box Score 2 The Scots Baseball Team continued their 2013 season on Tuesday when they traveled to Olivet College for a MIAA doubleheader. Alma dropped game one by the close score of 2-1 before coming back in the nightcap to beat Olivet 5-1.
The Scots are now 1-5 in the MIAA and 5-10 overall this season, while the Comets finished the day at 3-3 in the league and 8-6 in 2013.
In game one, the Scots lost in heartbreaking fashion. After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh, the Comets had runners on first and second with two outs. The umpire called a balk on Alma So. P Jose Velez (Tampa, Fla./South Fort Myers) that advaned the runners to second and third.
Olivet then got a single up the middle that tied the game at 1-1 and put runners at first and third. The next batter reached on a infield error by the Scots, and the runner at third was able to cross the plate with the game-winning run for the Comets.
The Scots had taken the 1-0 lead after a Velez triple led off the top of the seventh inning and he was able to come home on a sacrifice fly by So. IF Jose Rosado (Corona, NY/Bryant). The visitors could not get any more and took that one run lead into the bottom of the half of the inning.
Alma lost the contest despite another stellar performance by Velez, who pitched 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits. He struck out six, walked four and allowed the one earned run. At the plate, the Scots did not have much success against Olivet pitcher Jake Ball, as they could muster just three hits in the game.
Besides the Velez triple, the Scots got singles by Jr. IF Alex Kravat (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) and Sr. IF Matthew Cresswell (St. Louis, Mich./St. Louis). Alma also had two players reach base on walks.
Game two saw the Scots score single runs in the second, third, fourth innings and two in the fifth as they salvaged a split with a 5-1 win.
In the top of the second, Kravat walked with one out and eventually advanced to third. He was knocked in by Jr. IF Bryan Goostrey (Jackson, Mich./East Jackson), who hit a sacrifice fly. After Olivet tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame, Alma responded with another run in the third. Sr. IF Ryan Henris (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic) tripled to lead off inning and scored when Fr. OF John Mireles (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) doubled.
Leading 3-1 in the top of the fifth, the Scots got some breathing room with two additional runs. A Kravat double scored Velez from second and advanced Rosado to third with one out. Goostrey then grounded out to second but Rosado scored to give Alma the 5-1 advantage.
Alma got an outstanding effort by starting Jr. P Kevin Thompson (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey), who pitched a complete seven-inning game. He gave up seven hits with three strikeouts and more impressively, no walks, to earn the win.
At the plate, Sr. DH Cameron Schmidt (Port Austin, Mich./North Huron) went two for three with a run scored, while Fr. C A.J. Acton (Temecula, Calif./Linfield Christian) also went two for three and had an RBI.
The Scots continue their 2013 season on Saturday, when they play at Trine University in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. The following day, Alma is scheduled to host the Thunder for two games at Klenk Park, also at 1:00 p.m.
