On Saturday afternoon, the Alma Baseball team finished a weekend at Adrian with losses to the Bulldogs by scores of 17-0 in the first game and 9-5 in game two. After today, Alma is now 0-4 in the MIAA and 4-9 overall, while Adrian is now 4-2 in the league and 9-6 in 2013.
Adrian took control of the first game with four runs in the top of the first inning with the big blow being a three-run homer by Sam Fischer. They added five more in the third with Anthony Sergi providing the fire works on a three-run homer. The Bulldogs scored eight runs on five hits in the top of the sixth and then closed out the 17-0 victory.
Sr. P Alex Ruhlman (Ira, Mich./Algonac) started for Alma and went 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and nine earned runs in taking the loss. Jr. P Kevin Thompson (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) threw 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit and no runs and then was followed by So. P Chris Hawkins (Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) who allowed four hits and seven earned runs in a third of an inning.
Sr. P Mitch Wilson (Rudyard, Mich./Rudyard) got two outs in the sixth and allowed one run and then Jr. P Dan Johnson (Central Lake, Mich./Mancelona) pitched a scoreless seventh frame, allowing no hits. On offense, three different players had one hit each in the loss.
In game two, Adrian scored a run in the top of the first inning but the Scots answered with three of their own in the bottom of the second for a 3-1 lead. In their frame, the Scots scored runs on a balk and two grounders.
So. SS Jose Rosado (Corona, NY/Bryant) and Jr. RF Alex Kravat (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) each singled to start the inning. Jr. 1B Bryan Goostrey (Jackson, Mich./East Jackson) and Fr. CF John Mireles (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) each had runs batted in.
Adrian answered with five of their own in the top of the third for a 6-3 lead with the big hit being a grand slam homerun by Mitch Stefanski off of Alma starting P So. Roderick MacNeil (Brethren, Mich./Brethren).
The Scots made it 6-4 when So. DH Jose Velez (Tampa, Fla./South Fort Myers) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Sr. 2B Ryan Henris (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic), who had singled to start the inning.
After Adrian made it 8-4 with single runs in the top of fourth and fifth innings, Alma scored one to make it 8-5 in the bottom of fifth. Velez singled up the middle scoring Henris, who had again led off the frame with a hit. The Bulldogs scored one final run in the seventh and then held on for the 9-5 victory.
MacNeil pitched three innings in the loss, giving up seven runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts. So. P Eric Strickler (Lapeer, Mich./East Lapeer) went 3.0 innings and gave up two hits and one unearned run, while Fr. P Philip Jock (Wales, Mich./Memphis) pitched the final inning and allowed one unearned run.
Henris and Sr. SS Matthew Cresswell (St. Louis, Mich./St. Louis) each went two for four and Velez had the two runs batted in for Alma in the loss.
The Scots are next scheduled to play a doubleheader at Olivet College on Tuesday afternoon, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
