Alma Men's Basketball loses to John Carroll 115-84 on Saturday afternoon at Allegheny College

Box Score

Day two of the Greg Richards Memorial Tip-Off Classic at Allegheny College (PA) did not bring about the first win of the season for the Alma College men's basketball team as they had hoped. The Scots lost to John Carroll University (OH) by a score of 115-84 to see their record fall to 0-2 on the young season.

"I believe we were outclassed in every way today and we have a long way to go to become the team I think we can be," said Scots Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "I wouldn't be very optimistic if I felt we played as good as we are capable this weekend. Basketball is a long marathon season and there are three more opportunities this week that will tell us more about who were are and what we have."

The Blue Streaks jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and Alma would never see a lead during the contest. John Carroll extended their lead to 23-13 at the 10:18 mark of the first half and 30-17 at 8:37 before Alma went on a 9-0 run to cut their deficit to 30-26 with 7:26 remaining in the frame. The final bucket for the Scots was a three-pointer by So. G Tyler Walden (Perrinton/Fulton).

However, Alma's excitement was quickly dashed as the Blue Streaks went on a 22-1 run to take a 52-27 lead with 2:30 left in the half. The Scots were pretty much done for the day at this point and JCU finished out the half with a 61-35 advantage.

The good news of the second half was that the Scots scored an impressive 49 points, but the bad news was that JCU scored 54 and never allowed Alma to get back into contention. With both teams emptying their respective benches, the Blue Streaks coasted to a final margin of victory of 115-84.

All 15 players that suited up for Alma saw time on the floor and 10 of them saw 10 minutes or more of action. Sr. G Brandon Krause (Sanford/Meridian) had team-highs in minutes (24) and points (11) and also added a club-best six assists.

Walden had 10 points on the day on three of six shooting and had three assists, while So. G Brandon Trefil (Perrinton/Fulton) also 10 points (four of six from the floor) and added three rebounds and three assists. So. F DJ Beckman (Shelby/Shelby) had a team-high six rebounds.

As a team, Alma shot 42% from the field (31 of 74), including five of 25 in three-pointers, while John Carroll hit on 42 of 80 attempts (53%) and was good on nine of 24 from beyond the arc. The Blue Streaks led on the boards by a margin of 55-42 and the Scots were forced into 21 turnovers in the loss.

Next up for Alma is Defiance College on Wednesday evening at Art Smith Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's contest.
