Saturday afternoon brought the Alma College volleyball team to #1 ranked Calvin College, where the first-place Knights defeated the Scots 3-0 (10-25, 18-25, 14-25). With the loss, Alma is now 4-6 in the league and 9-10 overall, while Calvin improved to 10-0 in the MIAA and 18-0 in 2013.

"Facing the number one and number two teams in the nation back to back is not an easy task for any team," said Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "We came out strong last night against Hope with a great crowd and struggled to repeat that showing today at Calvin."

The Knights had control of the entire match even though the Scots tried to valiantly hang in there throughout. In set one, Alma was down 3-2 before an 11-3 Calvin run made it a 14-5 game. The Knights then closed out the 25-10 victory.

Set two saw Alma have a very early 2-1 advantage and then trailed by just one at 15-14 later on in the frame. However, Calvin buckled down and finished with a 10-4 run to win 25-18 and take a 2-0 match lead.

Again in set three, the Scots hung around early and trailed just 5-4 at one point. However, a 9-2 Calvin run led the eventual 25-14 set triumph and the 3-0 match victory.

Sr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) had seven assists and five digs for the Scots in the loss, while Fr. S Mary Dulzo (Novi, Mich./Mercy) finished with a team-high eight helpers and added three digs. In addition, Jr. OH/DS Laura Walker (Roscommon, Mich./Roscommon) contributed five kills and five digs.

The Scots continue their season on Wednesday evening at Saint Mary's College. Match start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
