Box Score In an emotional conference battle, the Alma College volleyball team defeated Olivet 3-2 (23-25, 25-27, 25-13, 25-16, 9-15) at the Art Smith Arena on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Scots improve to 13-13 overall with an 8-7 mark in the MIAA. The Comets drop to 9-18 on the year and 6-10 in league play with the loss.
" It is always nice to win on Senior Day!" said Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "We started a little slow, but once we started working together and executing on all of our touches we were very successful."
The Scots clung to a five-point advantage in the first set before Olivet would answer back to tie the set at 17-17. The Comets would score two straight to go up 19-17 but the Scots rebounded and tied the score at 22-22 late in set one. Alma took the 23-22 advantage but the Comets would finish the set scoring three unanswered to take set one 25-23.
Olivet jumped out to an early 6-2 lead to start the second set. The Scots would continue to fight and tie the set at 12-12. Alma held the four-point advantage at 19-15 before the Comets would answer to tie the set at 22-22. With the set tied at 25-25, Olivet recorded two-straight points to claim the second set 27-25.
With the third set being tied 5-5, Alma would turn up the intensity and maintain a comfortable nine-point lead throughout the set, eventually taking set three 25-13.
The Scots kept the momentum in the fourth set and maintained a lead throughout to take set four 25-16 and tie the match at 2-2.
Alma never trailed in the deciding set, claiming set five 15-9 and taking the match 3-2.
Three Scots recorded double-doubles led by Sr. MH Lea Klooster's (Jenison/Jenison) career-high 27 kills and 16 digs. So. OH Hannah Guilford (Hartland/Hartland) totaled 16 kills and 14 digs while Fr. S Mary Dulzo (Novi/Mercy) finished with a game-high 33 assists and 11 digs. Jr. OH Laura Walker (Roscommon/Roscommon) tallied 13 kills to go along with eight digs and Sr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason/Mason) totaled 26 assists in the victory.
Emma Brann led the Comets with 16 kills and Taylor Pringle finished with a team-high 25 assists on Tuesday.
Alma closes out the regular season on Friday, Nov. 1, at Trine in a match set for 6:30 p.m.
