Box Score The Alma College volleyball team traveled to Kalamazoo on Friday evening for an important MIAA match against the Hornets and came away with the impressive 3-0 win (25-22, 25-14, 25-21). With the victory, the Scots improved to 6-7 in the MIAA and 11-11 overall, while Kzoo is now 6-6 in the league and 12-12 in 2013.
"We played at a very high level throughout the entire match," said Scots Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "Even when they got runs we never lost our confidence which has been our problem in past matches and that is a really big step for us."
Alma led the first set from start to finish even though the Hornets twice cut the visitors lead to one point. However, with the score at 22-21, the Scots buckled down and closed out the 25-22 victory. Kalamazoo led 6-5 early in the second set, but Alma then went on a 6-0 run to lead 11-6 and never looked back en route to a convinicing 25-14 triumph.
Again in the third and deciding set, the Scots never trailed on their path to the match victory. Four times in the set it was a one-point game, the last being at 7-6, before a 8-2 Alma run made it 15-8. Kzoo didn't go out without a fight and outscored the Scots 12-7 to make it 22-20 before the visitors closed out the match with the 25-21 advantage.
Sr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) led Alma with 11 kills, 12 digs and one block assist, while Sr. MH Rebecca Trosper (Plano, TX/Lutheran North) added eight kills for the visitors. In addition, Fr. S Mary Dulzo (Novi, Mich./Mercy) led the Scots with 18 assists and had five digs, and Sr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) was next with 17 helpers and four digs.
Also contributing in the victory included So. OH/DS Hannah Guilford (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) had seven kills, four digs, one blocked shot and two block assists, while Jr. OH/DS Laura Walker (Roscommon, Mich./Roscommon) notched nine digs and six kills for Alma.
The Scots host Albion College tomorrow afternoon at Art Smith Arena in a match that is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
