Scots Volleyball defeats visiting Kalamazoo College in the 2012 MIAA Opener

Box Score

On Tuesday evening, the Alma College Volleyball team began the MIAA portion of the 2012 schedule when they hosted Kalamazoo College, 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-19) at a raucous Art Smith Arena. The Scots improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Hornets are now 2-3 this season and 0-1 in the MIAA.

"Overall, I don't think it was our best effort, but anytime you win a league match, you need to be happy," said Alma Head Sarah Dehring. "I believe we were a bit tired from our weekend in Texas but give Kalamazoo credit for giving us a tough three games. I want to thank all the students who came and created the great environment - it no doubt helped our energy level. We are still a work in progress and we will now get ready for Olivet on Friday."

In the victory, Jr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) led the Scots with 11 kills, while Jr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) paced the team with 31 assists and added seven kills. Sr. DS Megan Ballantyne (Allen Park, Mich./Southgate Anderson) had 13 digs, followed by Sr. OH Katie Bourbonnais (Niles, Mich./Niles) had 10 digs.

The Scots' next match will be at Olivet College on Friday evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. They will then be off until September 12 when they travel to Grand Rapids to take on Calvin College, also beginning at 6:30 p.m.
