Volleyball defeats Trine 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-21) on Friday evening

Box Score

On Friday evening, the Alma College Volleyball team looked to use the home court advantage to snap a four-match losing streak when they hosted Trine University. In front of a raucous crowd of 431, the Scots defeated the Thunder 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-21) to improve to 3-2 in the league and 8-5 overall. Trine fell to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA with the loss.

"I was happy with how we were able to turn this week around," said Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "I hate to see a team go through a slump like we did, but we were able to learn from our losses and come together as a unit."

The best thing a struggling team can do in any sport is get off to a fast start, and that is exactly what the Scots did against the Thunder. Alma jumped on them and cruised to a 25-14 victory in the first set, while the second set was very competitive throughout, before the Scots came away with the 25-23 win.

Trine took a 7-0 lead in the third set and appeared to be ready to make it a match. However, Alma was the better team on this evening and were not to be denied, as they fought back and ultimately won 25-21 to take the match 3-0.

Jr. MH Rebecca Trosper (Plano, Tex./Lutheran Northern) led the Scots with 10 kills, while Sr. OH Katie Bourbonnais (Niles, Mich./Niles) had eight kills and a team-high seven digs. Jr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) finished with 18 assists and So. S/DS Tricia Smith (Morley-Stanwood, Mich./Morley-Stanwood) had 12 assists. Jr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) notched three blocks on the evening.

Alma continues their 2012 season on Saturday, when travel to Saint Mary's to take on the Belles in a MIAA contest. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
