Baseball splits with Trine University at home today

The Alma College Baseball team hosted Trine University on Saturday afternoon on a sunny and comfortable early April day at Klenk Park and split a doubleheader. In the first contest, the Scots held on for a 4-3 victory, while in the nightcap, Trine struck early and came away with a 9-1 win.

Alma is now 8-13 on the season and 4-8 in the MIAA, while the Thunder stands at 12-12 in 2012 and 6-6 in the league. 

In the first game, the Scots scored three runs on four singles. So. 3B Alex Kravat (Bay City, Mich./Western) led it off and was followed by Fr. DH Blake Leddy (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) to put runners at the corners. Sr. RF Adam Jock (Wales, Mich./Memphis) followed with a single for an RBI and the inning was capped by a two-RBI single by Sr. C Matt Stephens (Maple Rapids, Mich./Fulton) to give the hosts the 3-0 advantage.

Alma added a run in the fourth and survived three unearned runs against the in the top of the sixth inning to keep Trine in check. So. P Kevin Thompson (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) went six innings and allowed seven hits and had three strikeouts to earn the win. Sr. P Richard Schreiber (Grayling, Mich./Grayling) pitched a perfect seventh inning for the save. 

In game two, Trine scored five runs with two outs in the top of the second inning and rode it all the way to the 9-1 victory. Jr. SS Ryan Henris (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic) had the lone Scots RBI on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning.

The Thunder also had two runs in both the fourth and fifth inning as they built their lead. Jr. P Alex Ruhlman (Algonac, Mich./Algonac) took the loss for Alma, who will next play Tuesday afternoon against Saginaw Valley State University at Klenk Park.
