The men's tennis team traveled to Adrian on Saturday to the Bulldogs. The Scots quickly dismissed their hosts with a 9-0 victory. The win moves the Scots into a 5th place tie with Albion in the conference standings.
The Scots started the day slowly before turning things on to gain all three doubles points.
At #1 doubles So. Logan Beard (Ithaca, MI/Ithaca, MI) and Fr. Trent Pontious (Caledonia, MI/Caledonia) claimed an 8-5 win. The #2 pairing of Sr. Ben Schippers (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City St. Francis) and So. Josh Gove (St. Johns, MI/St. Johns) dug themselves an early 3-1 hole before rebounding and winning seven straight games to close out an 8-3 victory. Sr. Mark Stuart (Midland, MI/Dow) and Fr. Justin Meyer (Warren Woods, MI/Warren Woods Tower) built an early 4-1 lead at #3 and held on for an 8-5 win.
"We came out a little to loose early in the doubles but were able to gain control and play well through the singles," said Head Coach Chris Sandro. "We have played a really tough schedule this year so it was nice to go out and play well and pick up a win."
In singles play the Scots built commanding leads and never looked back. The Scots picked up all six flights while losing a combined seven games. Alma picked up wins at the top three flights from Gove, Beard and Pontious by 6-1, 6-1 scores. Schippers gave the Scots a 6-1, 6-0 win at #5 singles. Meyer and So. Gordon Rumschlag (Romeo, MI/Romeo) each swept their opponents 6-0, 6-0 at #4 and #6 respectively.
The Scots will resume MIAA play on Wednesday with a match against Albion. Play is set to get underway at 4:00 p.m. at the Superior Street Tennis Complex.
