Baseball traveled to Trine University on Friday afternoon and split two games

On Friday afternoon, the Scots Baseball team traveled to Trine University to take on the Thunder in a MIAA doubleheader and split two games. The Scots dropped the first game 4-1 but came back to win the nightcap by a score of 6-4. Alma is now 3-7 in the MIAA and 6-13 overall, while the Thunder sits at 5-5 in the league and 11-11 in 2012.

In the first game, Trine scored three runs in the bottom of the first off of Alma starting Sr. P Richard Schreiber (Grayling, Mich./Grayling) that would prove to be enough for the win. The Scots fought back with one of their own in the top of the second after So. 3B Alex Kravat (Bay City, Mich./Western) doubled and ultimately scored on a ground out by Sr. 1B Micah Parshall (Benzie, Mich./Central).

Trine scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth and the Thunder recorded the 4-1 victory. Schreiber took the loss as he went all six innings, giving up five hits, three earned runs and had five strikeouts. Sr. Donny Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./GRCC) finished the game going two for four for Alma. 

In the nightcap, which saw 10 errors combined between the two teams, Alma jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, while Trine notched one in the bottom of the second to make it a 2-1 game. The Scots gained control with three tallies in the third, while adding an insurance run in the sixth to hold of the Thunder and notch the 6-4 win.

Two athletes from Mancelona, Mich. spearheaded the win for the Scots as Sr. P Anthony Derrer and So. P Dan Johnson earned the pitching win and save respectively. Derrer went 5.1 innings and gave up five hits and one earned run, while Johnson finished the game with a perfect 1.1 innings pitched.

Sr. C Matt Stephens (Maple Rapids, Mich./Fulton) was two for three with an RBI, while Sr. CF Ian Rhynard (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd) finished one for four with two runs scored. In addition, Kravat had a hit and an RBI and Fr. RF Blake Leddy (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) had a hit, an RBI and a stolen base in the win.

Alma and Trine will play another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Klenk Park in Alma.
