Alma Men's Tennis blanked at Kalamazoo

The men's tennis team fell to Kalamazoo 9-0 on Wednesday. The match against the Hornets, who are ranked #7 in the region, was forced indoors to Kalamazoo's Markin Center by rainy weather. The Hornet's victory clinched their 74th consecutive MIAA title.

The Scots played competitively, especially early in almost all of the matches but could not match the consistent powerful play that their opponents possessed. Sr. Mark Stuart (Midland, MI/Dow) and Fr. Justin Meyer (Warren Woods, MI/Warren Woods Tower) came the closest to notching a doubles win for the Scots, dropping an 8-4 decision at #3 doubles.

In singles play both So. Logan Beard (Ithaca, MI/Ithaca, MI) and Fr. Trent Pontious (Caledonia, MI/Caledonia) built 3-2 first set leads over their opponents before dropping the remaining games in route to 6-3, 6-0 losses. So. Josh Gove (St. Johns, MI/St. Johns) played an extremely competitive and hard-hitting match at #1 singles before falling by a deceptive 6-2, 6-1 score.

"We played very well across the board today," said Head Coach Chris Sandro. "We went out and gave our best effort against a very good team."

The Scots received a bit of good news on the way home regarding other action around the league. An 8-1 Albion victory over Trine moved the Scots into a current fourth place tie with the Thunder.

Alma closes out regular season action on Saturday against Calvin College at the Superior Street Tennis Complex. Play is scheduled to get underway at 1:00 p.m.
