On Tuesday afternoon, the Scots baseball team traveled to Grand Rapids to play a doubleheader against Calvin for the second consecutive day. The Knights took game one by a score of 4-2, while Alma won the nightcap by a mark of 4-1. The Scots are now 8-12 in the MIAA and 11-19 overall, while Calvin sits at 6-14 in the league and 11-20 in 2012.
Alma, playing as the home team for the doubleheader, took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of game one with two unearned runs, but Calvin answered with three in the top of the third and an insurance run in the top of the seventh to secure the 4-2 win.
Jr. SS Ryan Henris (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel-Catholic) was two for four, while Sr. C Matt Stephens (Maple Rapids, Mich./Fulton) had a hit and a run scored. Sr. P Donny Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./G.R. CC) pitched a complete game in the loss, giving up 11 hits, four earned runs and notching eight strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Scots scored two runs in the bottom of the first, while Calvin notched their only tally in the top of the second inning. Alma added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the final 4-1 victory, taking three of the four series games from the Knights.
Jr. IF Matt Cresswell (St. Louis, Mich./St. Louis) was two for four with a run scored in the win, while Stephens was one for three with a run and an RBI and Henris contributed a hit and an RBI. So. P Kevin Thompson (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) went the distance, giving up just five hits, no earned runs and had one strikeout.
The Scots continue the 2012 season on Wednesday afternoon, when they play at Davenport University beginning at 2:00 p.m.
