Alma Men's Tennis loses match to Augustana (Ill.), 9-0, on Tuesday

The men's tennis team dropped their second consecutive match on Tuesday, falling to Augustana College (IL) 9-0. The Scots were unable to overcome a combination of the Vikings' talent in combination with the warm Florida heat.

The Scots fell into an early 3-0 hole as Augustana swept doubles play. The Vikings won in routine fashion at the top two spots while the third flight was more closely contested. So. Gordon Rumschlag (Romeo, MI/Romeo) and Fr. Justin Meyer (Warren Woods, MI/Warren Woods Tower) hung with their talented opponents the whole way before falling 8-6.

In singles play the Scots had very early leads across the board but struggled to maintain their momentum, battling the hot Florida sun. The Scots managed only to win one set between the six flights.

At #5 singles Sr. Ben Schippers (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City St. Francis) gave Alma their best chance to pick up a point after winning the first set 6-2. In the end though Schippers fell 2-6, 6-3, 10-2. So. Logan Beard (Ithaca, MI/Ithaca, MI) also pushed his opponent at #2 singles into a tiebreaker in the second set as part of a 6-4, 7-6(5) loss.

With the 2-1 hole the Scots needed to win at least four of the six singles flights for the second day in a row. With three relatively quick victories it appeared the Scots might scrape by for their second consecutive close victory. So. Logan Beard (Ithaca, MI/Ithaca, MI) was able to pull the score even at 2-2 after running away with his match at #2 singles, 6-4, 6-0.

The Scots will be back in action Wednesday afternoon with a 1:30pm match against Wartburg College (IA). That match will be played at Star Island Resort in Kissimmee, Florida.
