Men's Tennis falls to Hanover College, 5-4

The men's tennis team lost to Hanover College on Monday by a 5-4 score. The disappointing loss drops the Scots to 1-4 on the season. The team was unable to overcome another sluggish doubles day in the loss.

For the second consecutive day the Scots were unable to build a lead in the doubles action. As was the case on Sunday, the #3 doubles team of So. Gordon Rumschlag (Romeo, MI/Romeo) and Fr. Justin Meyer (Warren Woods, MI/Warren Woods Tower was the only flight able to claim a victory. Rumschlag and Meyer used consistent, high-energy play to down their opponents 8-3.

With the 2-1 hole the Scots needed to win at least four of the six singles flights for the second day in a row. With three relatively quick victories it appeared the Scots might scrape by for their second consecutive close victory. So. Logan Beard (Ithaca, MI/Ithaca, MI) was able to pull the score even at 2-2 after running away with his match at #2 singles, 6-4, 6-0.

Finishing nearly simultaneously and pulling the Scots ahead 4-2 were Sr. Ben Schippers (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City St. Francis) and Fr. Trent Pontious (Caledonia, MI/Caledonia), at #5 and #3 singles respectively. Schippers improved to 4-1 on the season with another dominating service performance, winning 6-3, 6-2. Pontious continued his excellent first-year campaign with a 6-1, 7-5 win that showed off his excellent all-court game.

Despite a 4-2 lead, the match looked dire for the Scots, Hanover was up big at both #1 and #4 and the teams were locked in a tight match at #6. Hanover quickly closed out their wins at #1 and #4 leaving #6 singles to decide the outcome of the match. Sr. Mark Stuart (Midland, MI/Midland Dow) put up a valiant effort against an extraordinarily quick and consistent Hanover player before in the end falling 7-6, 7-5.

The Scots will be back in action Tuesday afternoon against Augustana College (IL). Play is set to get underway at 2:00pm at Oak Street Park in Kissimmee, FL.
