The Alma men's tennis team fell to DII Lake Superior State University Sunday afternoon inside the Stone Recreation Center. The match delivered plenty of hard hitting but the Scots were unable to string enough points together for a victory, falling 7-2.
The Scots began the day shorthanded, without a pair of key players who were performing with the Alma Symphony Orchestra. Fortunately for them, Lake State was also missing a player and forced to forfeit at #3 doubles and #6 singles.
Thus the Scots started play with a 2-0 lead already in hand. Sr. Ben Schippers (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City St. Francis) and Fr. Travis Long (Boyne City, Mich./Boyne City) benefited at #3 doubles. Fr. Phil Ryskamp (Grosse Ille, Mich./ Grosse Ille) stepped in to claim the walkover win a #6 singles.
With the 2-0 lead the Scots hit the courts looking to pick up 3 wins and sneak past a talented Lake State team. The Scots, however, were overmatched on the day and simply could not keep pace with the Lakers. The closest they were able to get to another win was Schippers at #4 singles, falling by a 6-4, 6-4 count.
"I saw a lot of bright spots today. We just couldn't put enough shots together to get a victory," Alma Head Coach Chris Sandro said. "We are going to go out and work hard this week to become a little more consistent."
The team will be back in action Saturday, February 18 at 11:00 a.m. when they take on NAIA #25, Spring Arbor University at the Stone Recreation Center. The talented Couger's squad features three nationally ranked players.
