Box Score The Alma Volleyball team hosted MIAA foe Kalamazoo College on Tuesday evening at Art Smith Arena and prevailed in a very hard fought five set match against the Hornets (19-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-17, 15-7). The win improved the Scots to 4-1 in the MIAA and 10-3 overall, while Kzoo is now 2-2 in the league and 3-9 in 2011.
"You obviously need to win three sets to win a match, but you don't really want to fall down 0-2 before you do," said Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "Our girls showed their heart and grit by coming back to get the win, but we have to be better starting matches. We'll take it and get back to work tomorrow to get ready for Calvin on Friday."
Kalamazoo came out hitting on all cylinders and jumped out to an 18-5 advantage, en route to a 25-19 first set win. In the second set, the Hornets and Scots played a back and forth game before the visitors prevailed again by the score of 25-19.
In the third and fourth sets, the Scots led most of the way in each, before winning 25-18 and 25-17 respectively. In the final deciding set, Alma jumped out to a 6-1 lead and held on for the 15-7 win and the 3-2 overall victory.
In the win, Jr. OH Katie Bourbonnais (Niles, Mich./Niles) led the Scots with 15 kills, while Sr. MH Shelby Gray (Orchard Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) was next with nine kills. So. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) had a team-high 33 assists, while Sr. DS Erica Adams (Milford, Mich./Milford) paced the team with 25 digs.
The Scots next play on Friday night, when they travel to Grand Rapids to take on the #1 Calvin Knights beginning at 6:30 p.m. Alma will host Olivet College on Saturday night at Art Smith Arena, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
