Scots Volleyball defeats St. Mary's 3-2

On Tuesday evening, the Alma Volleyball team hosted MIAA foe Saint Mary's College for Senior Night 2011. The Scots won a hard-fought and tightly contested affair, 3-2 (25-15, 11-25, 17-25, 25-19, 15-9), in Art Smith Arena. The win improved Alma to 9-4 in the MIAA and 16-7 overall, while the Belles are now 5-7 in the league and 7-14 in 2011.

Before the game, Alma's three seniors - Erica Adams (Milford, Mich./Milford), Andria Baker (Constantine, Mich./Constantine) and Shelby Gray (Orchard Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) - were honored by their teammates and coaches. The Scots' junior players gave words of remembrance, and their was a stirring video presentation on the scoreboard for the players.

The Scots came out strong in the first set and stormed the visitors by a score of 25-15, looking very determined to make it a quick match. However, the visiting Belles had other ideas as they took the next two sets by margins of 25-11 and 25-17, and looked in control to steal a victory on the road.

Alma was not going to go down without a fight though on this Senior Night. The Scots defeated the Belles 25-19 in the fourth set, and took control of the fifth set from the beginning, eventually winning by a score of 15-9, and securing the 3-2 match win for the home team.

On the evening, Gray led the way with 14 kills, while Adams was tops for the team with 19 digs. Baker saw action in four sets and finished with 11 digs and three kills. So. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) added 11 kills, while So. OH Kelly Maise (Northville, Mich./Northville) contributed 15 digs. Jr. S Kelsee Miles (Hanover, Mich./Hanover-Horton) led the Scots with 18 assists, while So. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) added 15.

The Scots will play at Kalamazoo on Friday evening, before ending their home portion of the 2011 season on Saturday. Alma will host #1 Calvin College at 1:00 p.m. and then will take on Finlandia University at approximately 6:00 p.m.
