Alma Volleyball wins 3-0 match at Kalamazoo

The Alma Volleyball team, fresh off of a Championship at the Bishop Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan last weekend, traveled to Kalamazoo on Tuesday evening for their first MIAA match of the 2010 season. The Scots continued their early clutch play by defeating the Hornets, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-23), to improve their record to 5-0.

"Kalamazoo played a very good game against us and defended us well all night," said Alma Head Coach Cheyenne Luzynski. "We have room for improvement, but we made the plays when we needed to and we stayed focused down the stretch. We have started well and we have a couple of days to of practice to make adjustments before we play at Adrian on Saturday. We have a young team that is learning, and I am happy with the quick start."

The Scots were led by Sr. Hannah Hewitt (Harbor Springs, MI/Harbor Springs Christian), who had a team-high 41 assists and added 17 digs. Jr. Shelby Gray (Orchard Lake, MI/West Bloomfield) contributed a team-high 12 kills, and additionally, Sr. Stephanie Bradshaw (Livonia, MI/Churchill) had a career-high 36 digs in the win over the Hornets.

The Scots continue league play on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Adrian to take on the Bulldogs in a 1:00 p.m. match. Alma next plays at home on Wednesday, September 15, when they host Trine University in the first official sporting event at the new Art Smith Arena. The contest starts at 6:30 p.m.
