Alma Volleyball hosted MIAA rival Saint Mary's College on Friday evening and defeated the Belles, 3-0 (25-12, 25-7, 25-18), at Art Smith Arena. The win improved the Scots' record to 9-4 (4-1, MIAA), while SMC dropped to 1-4 in the league and 3-10 overall in 2010.
The home team jumped on Saint Mary's quickly and never let the visitors get into a groove during any game of the match. Sr. Hannah Hewitt (Harbor Springs, MI/Harbor Springs Christian) had a team-high 15 assists on the evening, while Fr. Kelly Maise (Northville, MI/Northville) added 12 digs. In addition, Jr. MH Shelby Gray (Orchard Hills, MI/West Bloomfield) notched eight kills and Fr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, MI/Mason) added six assists.
Alma Head Coach Cheyenne Luzynski had a unit comprised of all freshmen in the third game and the young group was able to get some valuable experience, wrapping up the match with a hard-fought 25-18 victory.
The Scots next play tomorrow, when they host Albion College at Art Smith Arena, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The afternoon marks the 2010 Alma College Volleyball Parents Day.
The Scots are also having a fundraiser for the youth teams of Nicaragua, accepting athletic balls of any kind (baseball, softball, volleyball, etc). Alma traveled to the Central American country in August, and are trying to send their new friends equipment that will allow them to compete in their sports. T-shirts will also be on sale to the public and students.
