ALMA VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS ALBION 3-1 IN TOUGH MATCH AT CAPPAERT

The Alma Volleyball team competed at home on Wednesday evening and defeated MIAA rival Albion College, 3-1, at Cappaert Gymnasium. The win (23-25, 33-31, 25-12, 25-23) improved the Scots' record to 5-3 overall (2-2 in MIAA), while the Britons fell to the identical record of 5-3 (2-2).

"Young teams, like ours, develop in stages," said Alma Head Coach Cheyenne Luzynski. "The first thing a coach must do is teach them how to play and then how to compete on the floor. Finally, a young team must be taught how to win.  I think tonight was an example of an inexperienced squad that might be figuring it out. I believe our girls learned a lot from our match at Saint Mary's on Saturday (three close losses), and that is a good sign moving forward."

The Scots and Britons played a spirited match throughout. Alma was led by So. MH Beth Caldwell (Imlay City, MI/Imlay City), who had 16 kills, while So. MH Shelby Gray (Bloomfield Hills, MI/West Bloomfield) added 13 and So. MH Kelsey Thompson (Morley, MI/Morley-Stanwood) contributed 11 kills on the evening. Jr. S Hannah Hewitt (Alanson, MI/Harbor Light Christian) had 48 assists for the Scots, while Jr. OH Stephanie Bradshaw (Livonia, MI/Churchill) led the way with 24 digs.

Alma takes a break from league play this weekend, when they travel to Wittenberg, OH, to take part in the Border Battle Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The squad will play four matches over the weekend, the first being against Ohio Northern University at 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon.

The Scots resume league play next Tuesday evening, when they host Kalamazoo College at Cappaert Gymnasium. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
