The Alma College Volleyball team entered Friday night's MIAA Semi-Final confident they could defeat the #2 seed Calvin College after playing them tough in the regular season. But it was not to be, as the Scots picked a bad time to have an off night, falling to the Knights 0-3 (23-25, 21-25, 17-25). Alma finishes the 2009 campaign with a final record of 17-13, while Calvin improved to 26-6 on the season.
"That was not the Alma team tonight that we are used to seeing," said Alma Head Coach Cheyenne Luzynski. "We played like a very average team and against a team like Calvin, average will not get it done. Although another third place finish in the league is a sign that the program is moving forward, our girls need to understand the urgency of the moment and rise to the next level."
The Scots jumped out strong in game one, taking an 8-2 advantage before Calvin took a 19-16 lead at an Alma timeout. The Scots fought back, but ultimately dropped the initial game 23-25. In game two, Calvin took an early 13-9 lead, but the Scots battled back and took an 18-17 advantage as the Knights called timeout. Again, Alma was unable to finish as Calvin prevailed in game two by a margin of 25-21.
The third game was all Calvin however, as the Knights took an early 10-5 lead and still led 16-10 later in the game at an Alma timeout. The Scots were not able to close gap at any point the rest of the way and ultimately dropped a 17-25 game that ended the match at 0-3 for Calvin.
