For those in attendance Tuesday night for the Alma and Adrian College Volleyball game at Cappaert Gymnasium, it does not get much better in collegiate athletics. Two talented teams playing their hearts out in a big conference game and it went down to the wire.
The Alma Scots prevailed 3-2 (27-29, 25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 21-19) in a thrilling MIAA contest that saw Alma improve to 5-1 in conference play, good for second place behind 7-0 Hope College, and 13-5 overall. The game was not decided until a 5th match that saw both teams have mutiple chances to clinch the win, but a victory did not happen until Alma got the 21-19 decision after over two hours of spirited competition.
Every Alma player on the court contributed to the win and Kim Gillhespy led the way with 27 kills followed by Beth Caldwell and Jennifer Drumm, who had 13 and ten kills respectively. Hannah Hewitt led the way with 57 assists, while multiple players had impressive games in the digs category - Katie Porter (30), Stephanie Bradshaw (29) and Caldwell (29).
The Scots are now off until Wednesday, October 1, when they will host first-place Hope College in what is expected to be a much anticipated MIAA contest at Cappaert Gymnasium. The game begins at 6:30 p.m.
