ALMA, Mich. - Alma College volleyball (33-0, 16-0 MIAA) remains undefeated on the season after defeating Hope in five games tonight. The Scots are one of just six undefeated teams in NCAA volleyball and the only undefeated Division III team in the nation. The Maroon and Cream advance to the MIAA Tournament finals tomorrow (Nov. 6) where they face second-seeded Calvin at 4 p.m.
For just the second time this season, the Scots were forced into a deciding fifth game. With a frenzied home crowd inside the Scots� Cappaert Gymnasium, Alma was able to stave off the Flying Dutch throughout the match.
Game one proved to a be a marathon as Hope and Alma battled back and forth before the Flying Ducth took the first game, 40-38, the Scots' highest-scoring game of the season. The Scots rebounded to take the next two games handily, 30-17 and 30-23, respectively. But Hope was not to be ignored, coming back in the fourth game, 30-21, to force game five. The Scots stood the line to take the deciding game, 15-10.
Alma was led by senior Kristin Judson (Frankenmuth) with 24 kills, three aces, 18 digs and three solo blocks and three block assists. Erin Fralick (Petoskey) added 17 kills, two digs, one solo block and three block assists while Caitlin Deis (Chelsea) added 15 kills and 12 digs in the effort. Lindsey Baker (Chelsea) played another solid game with 62 assists and 18 digs while Kerri Judson (Frankenmuth) led all defensive efforts with 30 digs.
Hope was led by Julie VanderSlice with 31 kills and 19 digs. The Flying Dutch end the season with a 19-14 record after finishing the regular conference season with an even 8-8 record.
Alma moves to the finals of the MIAA Tournament where it faces No. 2 seed Calvin at 4 p.m., Saturday.
