CALEDONIA, Mich. – After a two-day hiatus from opening the season series with the Calvin University Knights, the Alma College baseball team closed out game three with the Knights on Monday, April 20th, at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on the campus of Davenport University. The Scots took the first lead of the game but a late push from the Knights would be pivotal in preventing the Scots from sweeping Calvin, dropping game three by a score of 4-3.
The Scots scored two of their three runs in the second inning as Justin Diaz reached first on a walk. Charlie Martyn put himself and Diaz into scoring position with a double to center field. Grady Pieratt loaded the bases for Alma with a walk as well giving way to Giuseppe Sapienza with the bases loaded and two outs. A crucial base knock from Sapienza up the middle gave Alma a lead as Diaz and Martyn scored for the games first runs.
Alma increased their lead in the fifth as Pieratt again drew a walk before stealing second during the following at bat. Sapienza collected another RBI with a single through the right side, scoring Pieratt and putting Alma up by three, halfway through the game.
Calvin's offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth as a two-run home run brought the Knights within striking distance, trailing by one with four more innings to play. The sixth inning saw another two runs come home for the hosts as a single and a sacrifice fly proved to be enough to steal the game and hold off the sweep.
Cade Sutherland was the Scots starter on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings with three strikeouts. Evan Litwiller saw two-thirds of an inning followed by Kaden Warren who closed out the final 2.2 innings with two strikeouts as well.
Alma will quickly return to action as the Scots will host the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College, tomorrow, Tuesday, April 21st, for the final game of the singles series at Klenk Park. First pitch is set for 4:00 PM.
