OLIVET, Mich. — The Alma College volleyball team battled back from an early deficit and pushed the University of Olivet to five sets on Wednesday evening, ultimately falling 3-2 (13-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-22, 7-15) at the Cutler Event Center.
The Scots (6-11, 0-2 MIAA) responded after dropping the opening set, taking the second set 25-17 behind a .270 hitting percentage. Alma continued to battle in the third and fourth sets, earning a 25-22 victory in the fourth to force a decisive fifth set.
Emily Carling led the Scots offensively with 15 kills, while Maggie McKale added 14 kills and seven total blocks. Nevea Bush contributed seven kills.
Rudy Maynard paced the Alma offense with 26 assists, while Grace Droste added 11 and Cassidy Rees finished with six. Grace Steiner led the defensive effort with 24 digs, followed by Maren DeBeau with 13 and Grace Evans with 11.
At the net, Mackenzie Siko recorded a team-high four blocks, while McKale and Allie Fish each added three. Fish also led Alma with two service aces.
The Scots return travel to Grand Rapids for the Midwest Invitational on Saturday before resuming conference play on Tuesday, October 13 when they take on Trine at home.
