How It Happened:
Albion received the opening kickoff and took their first possession into the end zone on a 22-yard pass from Ian Deromedi to Jaylan Johnson for a 7-0 upper-hand. The Britons got the ball back relatively quickly courtesy of a Desean Jenkins interception, which he returned 28 yards into Alma territory (ALM 32) before Spencer Berkeypile extended the lead to ten via a 45-yard field goal, 10-0. Back-to-back punts ensued then the Scots got on the board shortly before the end of the frame as
Jason Boge found
TJ Seiler for an 11-yard score as the end of the first read, 10-7 Brits.
Â
Ryan West (Michigan) then flipped the game on its head by jumping a route and returning it 37 yards to the house as the Scots turned a 10-0 deficit into a 14-10 lead in a two-minute span. The Purple and Gold then got the momentum back instantaneously, as they found a busted coverage and converted it into a 70-yard pitch-and-catch from Deromedi to Sherron Sutton as the Britons regained the advantage once again at the 12:44 mark, 17-14. Each team could not muster any offensive traction on their next drives as Alma got the ball back on their own 9 with five minutes remaining in the half. The visitors moved the length of the field swiftly to find paydirt in just two minutes and 12 seconds to cap the scoring via an eight-yard strike from
Tyler Herzog to
Brayden Sullivan in a back-and-forth first half, taking a 21-17 upper-hand into the break.
Â
Jaylen Maddox electrified the vocal Alma faithful that filled the visitors side of
Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium on the first play of the third quarter, splitting the Albion kickoff coverage and racing down the sidelines before being tackled at the Britons 9 for a return of 86 yards. The Maroon and Teal were unable to translate that field position into points as they missed a 36-yard field goal.
Joey Kostrubiec got the pigskin right back to the offense three plays later however, intercepting the Scots' second pass of the game to set the visitors up just outside the Albion 30. Alma stalled at the goal line as their fourth down fade from the one-yard line was batted away. The Brits looked like they were about to retake the lead as they marched 72 yards in 14 plays and into the fourth quarter, but the drive that took 8:21 off the clock was spoiled when
Joe Debski plucked an overthrown pass with a toe-dragging INT in the back of the end zone to preserve the 21-17 edge.
Â
The final frame's opening sequences went Alma punt, Albion turnover on downs, Alma punt before things got dramatic. The Brits got the ball on a rare punt touchback with 6:37 to go in the game and had first-and-goal from the Alma 2 with approximately 51 seconds remaining. Three straight rushes up the gut were stuffed by the Scots defensive line and the contest came down to one final play with Alex Trudell fighting his way through traffic on his fourth consecutive carry to score a touchdown with seven seconds to put Albion up 24-21. The kickoff went out of bounds, Sullivan caught a 13-yard out route to get Alma to their own 48 with one last chance. The final desperation heave as time expired fell 20 yards shy of the end zone and into the arms of defender Chase Thomas as Albion pulled off the upset, 24-21.
Â
Scots' Top Performers:
Jett King continues to fly around the gridiron, leading all tacklers with 14 for his game in the last five with double-digit takedowns of the ballcarrier, including a half-TFL he shared with
Jayden Button who had a career-most 11 tackles, seven solo. Kostrubiec was fantastic as well, capturing his first career interception, forcing a fumble that was covered up by the offense, and tallying six takedowns.
Zayne Moore posted the only unassisted tackle for loss as part of a nine-tackle affair and
Reed Seabase broke up a pass as well.
Â
Seiler has emerged as a constant threat in the wideout corps, being on the receiving end of a career-high nine of the 20 completions (45%) for 80 yards and the score. Sullivan caught three balls for 28 yards and his second career touchdown while Herzog completed 10-of-11 (90.9%) pass attempts with a score through the air.
Â
Maddox took two kickoffs back a combined 113 yards (56.5 YPR) and narrowly missed his first touchdown but has come painstakingly close to breaking through for six for the third week in-a-row.
Jacob Kluk averaged 44 yards per punt with one inside the 20,
Will Soulliere booted touchbacks on two of his four kickoffs, and
Jace Heck went 3-for-3 on PATs.
