ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College track and field team finally got to the biggest event of the season on the schedule, hosting the MIAA Field Day's on Thursday and Friday, May 1st and 2nd. Competing on home turf for the MIAA Championship for first time in over five years, Alma saw a handful of personal records and a younger core prove they can compete with the best in the conference. Both teams finished seventh on their respective sides for the Championship with the men scoring 20 points and the women scoring 28.
For the men's side of the championship, the 4x400 meter relay team of Aiden Adrich, Aiden Tornberg, Luke Martin and Will Maginity, highlighted the men's scoring with a third-place finish in the event, running a time of 3:22.73. The team's time was good enough to join the all-time top ten list for the relay event, sliding in at number nine. Moving to high jump, freshman Joshua Oziwele, in just his fifth time competing in the event, placed fifth in the conference, with a personal record mark of 1.89 meters, soaring past his previous best of 1.81 meters. Oziwele breezed through the early marks, and made his jumps look easy each time he beat his previous best in the competition. Ed Markarian collected a ninth-place finish in the long jump, setting his competition mark at 6.15 meters, just short of a podium finish. Collecting another top five finish for the Scots was Ryan McGuire, who finished fifth in the men's hammer throw. McGuire also blew past his previous best and in the process set a new school record with a throw of 49.29 meters, passing the previous record of 47.66 meters set by Austin DeRocher. Finishing top ten in the javelin throw, Austin Thompson also set a new personal best with a throw of 44.62 meters, beating his previous record set just a week ago.
For the women, Sophia Dech finished in ninth for the women's 5,000-meter run, clocking in at 1848.93, her fastest time to date in the event. She also set a new fastest time in the 10,000-meter run as well with a time of 39:56.31, finishing in ninth behind her teammate Chloe Colton, who finished in eighth with a personal best time of 39:43.52. In the 100-meter hurdles finals, Helena Snyder finished sixth with a time of 16.21, just two hundredths of a second off from fifth-place. Qualifying for finals in the 400-meter hurdles, Kaitelyn Walker finished eighth coming off a career-best time of 1:10.14 in prelims, ran a finals time of 1:16.23 to reach the podium. In the pole vault, Lauren McCarthy finished ninth, clearing the bar at 2.85 meters. In the long jump, Lauren Brawt finished eighth with a mark of 4.95 meters, for Alma's highest finisher in the event. Julia Haggart finished ninth in the shot put, throwing for 10.97 meters. Haggart also competed in the discus throw, finishing seventh with a personal record throw of 33.98 meters. Moving over to the javelin throw, Laisha Isenberg led the way for the Scots, finishing tenth with a career-best throw of 26.21 meters. Alma's best finish of the championship came in the women's high jump as Snyder finished second in the event, clearing the bar at 1.58 meters, just barely off from her best mark. Snyder lost to the champion by .01 meters as she looked to sweep the event for indoor and outdoors.
Alma will now look towards select last chance meets for improving marks and times for a chance at competing at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships, held in Geneva, Ohio. Last chance meet times and dates will be released in the coming days as entry's are made and lists are formed.
