JACKSON, Miss. – The Alma College baseball team rounded out their spring break slate of games on Saturday, March 1st as they concluded their series with Millsaps College. The Scots won the final game of the series, 4-1 in Jackson, Mississippi.
The Scots stuck pay dirt first in the final game of the series, coming in the fourth inning as Cameron Bleasdale led the inning off with a walk and would advance to second as Alexander Kavalick was walked as well. Loading the bases was Charlie Chmielewski as he would stay patient as draw a walk as well, setting up Tony Smith for a sacrifice fly out to center field, scoring Bleasdale. The Majors would tie the game off a solo home run in the fifth, but the Scots answered back right away. In the sixth, Bleasdale was walked again and would advance to second on an error and then third on a failed pickoff attempt. The during the next at bat, Bleasdale would use smart base running to score at home on a passed ball, giving Alma a 2-1 lead.
Alma would double their lead in the eighth as Brant Goodpaster led the inning off with a single to right field. Warren then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Goodpaster to second. Bleasdale then sent a ball into left field for a single to put runners on the corners momentarily. Bleasdale would move to second during the next at bat on a wild pitch. Kavalick would do the heavy lifting as he would send a ball to deep right field for a double, scoring both Goodpaster and Bleasdale and put the Scots up 4-1, the eventual final score.
On the mound for the Scots was their ace, Tyler Johnson. Johnson who pitched on Sunday and got the win, made his second appearance of the season and went the full distance. Pitching a complete game, nine innings, while only allowing six hits and zero walks, also racked up 11 strikeouts for the second time this season. Johnson moves to 2-0 on the season as the Scots moved to 2-3. The win also boosted Head Coach Jason Crain to reach his 100th win at Alma to round out the trip. Crain is only the third coach in Scots history to eclipse 100 wins as the crew chief.
Alma now returns to the Mitten State for a much colder weekend series ahead. The Scots will return to the diamond on Saturday, March 8th, as they will head down 127 to face off against the Cleary University Cougars in Howell, Michigan. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 1:00 PM.
