ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College men's wrestling team opened up the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action on Thursday, January 16th as they hosted the reigning MIAA Champion Adrian College. The Scots fell behind in the score early, but would win a handful of matches coming down the stretch to bring the final score to 32-16, in favor of the Bulldogs.
Adrian scored the first team pints of the night as Jushawn Ferrell Jr. was defeated by decision in a tightly contested match that saw a final score of 4-2, putting Adrian up first. The Bulldogs would then keep the pressure on as they would also claim the next four matches by tech fall and falls to take a 25-0 lead. In the 165 bout, Rodrick Love battled hard all the way until the final buzzer in the third period, though he would drop the match by one point with a final score of 8-7 in favor of Adrian. Following the 165 match, Adrian held a 28-0 lead before tacking on their final four of the night in the next match. Eddie Williams, wrestling in the 184 class, picked up the Scots first win of the night as he defeated Trenton DiGenova by major decision (15-4) giving Alma four team points. Luke Martin then took the mat in the 197 class, where he was able to add another consecutive win for the Scots as he defeated Daxton Looney by fall in 4:09, bringing the Alma team score to ten. In the final match of the night, Matthew Johnson faced off against Blake Daniels. Johnson waited patiently for his time to go on offense, and capitalized quickly. Johnson was able to pin his opponent in 1:59, giving Alma another six points, bringing the final score to 32-16, following three consecutive wins from the Scots.
Alma falls to 0-1 in conference play as Adrian moves to 1-0. The Scots will now have two days off before hosting the Alma Open on Sunday, January 19th, inside Art Smith Arena. Matches are set to begin at 9:00 AM.
