KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team concluded their season on Friday, May 10th, at Woodworth Field on the campus of Kalamazoo College. The Scots were defeated by the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College in an elimination game for the MIAA Tournament. The Scots dropped the contest by a final score of 7-0.
Hope opened the scoring in the top of the first as they were able to drive in one unearned run off of a throwing error trying to catch the Flying Dutchmen stealing. Alma was able to put runners on the base in the bottom of the inning, but would be held at second and scoreless after one. Both pitchers would take control of the game and let their defenses make the plays needed to keep the score close on both sides. In the fourth, Hope was able to score another solo run, on well-placed hits to take a 2-0 lead.
Again, both pitchers were able to locate their pitches and keep hits and runs to a minimum until the seventh, where Hope would break through an extend their lead. Several singles and a double would be the story of the seventh inning for the Scots as Hope would tack on four runs as time was slowly running out for Alma. The Scots would threaten with a couple more hits in the final innings but it would be the Flying Dutchmen who would add one more run and eliminate Alma from the MIAA Tournament, one season after making the championship series.
Tyler Johnson began the day on the mound for Alma going 6.2 innings as he would strike out four and pick up the loss. Chase Balhoff and Ken Fistler both came in four an inning each as relief for Johnson.
Alma finishes the season with a record of 24-18, while going 13-8 in MIAA conference action. The Scots will graduate Kevin Tuttle, Brendan McManus, Mac Hawley, Cam Jones, Dalton D'Alexander, Colin Czajkowski and Avery Carnicom as Alma will turn their attention towards the 2025 season next spring.
