ALBION, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team rounded out a three-game series with the Britons of Albion College on Sunday, April 14th. The game was originally scheduled for Friday, April 12th, but poor weather moved the game to Sunday. The Scots had already taken the first two games that were played on Saturday and completed the sweep on Sunday with an 8-7 win over Albion.
The first inning saw the Scots score the first run of the game on a line out by Avery Carnicom, scoring Kevin Tuttle who reached first by a single. The Britons added a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at one apiece. Albion took their first lead of the game in the third as they would score another solo run, going up 2-1. Another solo run came in the bottom of the fourth for the Britons to extend their lead to two, but Alma had plans to change that in the fifth. Tuttle led the inning off with another single and stole second to put himself into scoring position. Tony Smith then singled to center field and scored Tuttle, bringing Alma within one. Kyler warren would then add two RBIs scoring Smith and Colin Czajkowski, who reached base after a walk, with a double to right field, putting the Scots back up by one. Smith then added an RBI in the sixth with a double to right field scoring Mitch Foley who doubled earlier in the lineup.
The Scots would pile on more run in the top of the eighth inning as errors and hit by pitches would load the bases. A Smith sacrifice fly to left field would score the first run and a Carnicom double added another two runs, putting the Scots up 8-3 as Albion was down to their final six outs. The Bottom of the eighth provided trouble for the Scots pitchers and bullpen as Albion would load the bases, leading to several hit by pitches or walks that would score Briton base runners. Albion would pull within one by the end of the eighth inning, looking to the ninth to tie the game or walk it off against Alma. The Scots would be held scoreless in the top of the ninth to give the Britons a chance, but two strikeouts from Ken Fitsler and a ground out would do it as Alma would hold on to win their third straight game by one run.
Kyler Warren took the mound for the Scots first pitch as he would go for four innings and collecting two strikeouts. Cam Jones was awarded the win as he pitched for 3.2 innings and recorded five strikeouts while only allowing one hit. Davin Reif also saw action on the mound for the Scots.
Alma will now have a week off before hosting The University of Olivet on Friday, April 19th for a single game to open the season series at Klenk Park. First pitch is set for 4:00 PM.
