South Bend, IN – Alma College Women's Lacrosse headed down to Indiana to take on St. Mary's in MIAA play on Wednesday night.
Alma scored the opening goal of the game with
Rileigh McGeorge tallying off of a
Kirsten Browne assist. Alma quadrupled their lead in the next several minutes. Goals came from
Sam Peterson,
Joanna Scorziello, and Browne with two of the marks coming woman-up.
The hosts responded with a pair of goals to make it 4-2 with 6:21 to go in the first. The Scots got one more goal from Peterson, and led 5-2 after one quarter. Alma brought the score to 7-2 at the 13:12 mark of the 2
ndwith a pair of goals from Browne and Bollinger. Just as it looked as though Alma may pull away, the Belles scored 3-straight to pull within 2 at 7-5. Scorziello ripped another shot home, and
Kylie Lewis was able to respond after another goal by the home side. Browne scored once more to cap the Alma scoring, and the Scots led 10-7 at halftime.
Out of halftime, the Belles were flying. Saint Mary's outscored the visitors 7-2, and Alma was able to snag goals from Bollinger at 8:59, and Browne at 8:13. However, the outburst had Belles leading 14-12 after three quarters.
The 4
th quarter turned out to be an absolute slugfest. The Belles scored first to push ahead by 3, but Peterson scored at the 12:45 mark to keep Alma in it. That was the first of 3 goals by Peterson that tied up the game at 15-15.
At that point, the teams traded blows. Saint Mary's went ahead at 8:59,
Rileigh McGeorge leveled the game for Alma at 5:45. The Belles took the lead again with 55 seconds remaining, McGeorge equalized just 21 seconds later at 0:34.
Things looked doomed when the hosts scored with just 12.5 seconds remaining. However, Alma won the draw control, and Browne proceeded to score a game tying buzzer beater to equalize at 18-18 and send the game to OT.
In overtime, it was the regulation hero Browne who scored 1 minute and 17 seconds in to win it for Alma.
The OT hero Browne finished with 6 goals and an assist to go with 3 groundballs. McGeorge grabbed a game high 6 groundballs, and Bollinger caused 3 turnovers.
Peterson totaled 9 points on 5 goals and 4 assists, moving the senior into 2nd place on the Women's Lacrosse Career Point list.
Alexis Norko (1-0) picked up the win in relief, making 5 saves.
Alma looks forward to hosting Trine at home on Saturday.
