Softball Earns Split on Penultimate Day of Spring Break Action in Florida

Melbourne, FL  - Alma College Softball took to the diamond for their penultimate day of action in Florida on Thursday. Alma was defeated by Grove City, before downing Houghton to split the day.

Grove City 5, Alma 0

The Scots struggled to get the bats going early in the day. GCC's Brooke Brodie kept Alma's hitters guessing, and the Scots were able to amass just 3 base knocks in the loss, with 2 of them coming in the 7th inning off of the Wolverine closer. Grove City scored in the 3rd, striking for a pair of runs. GCC also scored 3 runs on a bases clearing double late in the 5th. Alma had 3 errors that also contributed to the loss, with all 5 of Grove City's runs unearned.

Morgan Westall (3-1) picked up the loss, going 4.2 and giving up all 5 runs, all unearned. She struck out 7, and allowed 5 in the loss.

Alma 4, Houghton 1

Alma's bats found life again in their second game of the day against Houghton. Emily Dimock singled down the right field line in the bottom of the 1st, and a double steal with Danielle Dumoulin worked to score the first run of the game. An error on a pop fly to left allowed Dumoulin to score 2 batters later to help Alma up 2-0.

The Scots struck again in the 2nd, with Darcy Daenzer reaching on a single to center field to open the inning. The Scots bunted her to second, and an error aided her to third base. Reneigh Sandmann singled on a diving play by the third baseman, and Daenzer charged home to score. Moments later Mackenna Salley, who had reached on the error which sent Daenzer to third, was able to score on a Dimock single to center to make it 4-0.

Houghton managed just one hit in the game, and scored their lone run on a throwing error by Alma in the 5th. At the end the final score was 4-1 in favor of Alma.

Mikaylyn Kenney (3-1) went the distance in the win, punching out 9 hitters, while allowing just 1 hit in the victory.

Emily Dimock led the offense, going 2-3 with an RBI in the win. Darcy Daenzer also notched a 2-3 stat line.

The Scots are back at it tomorrow, with games against Rose-Hulman and Houghton to close out their Spring Break trip.
