DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Alma College baseball returned to the fields in Florida on Thursday, February 29th to take on the Grove City College Wolverines. The Scots added another win on the trip as they beat the wolverines 5-1.
The Scots started their offense in the bottom of the first innings as Kyler Warren reached first after being hit by a pitch. Warren advanced to second on a wild pitch then to third on a ground out before reaching home and scoring again on a ground out by Colin Czajkowski. Alma added another run in the second as Kevin Tuttle was also hit by a pitch. Brant Goodpaster also reached first after being hit by another pitch then leading to Charlie Martyn laying down a sacrifice bunt and advancing both runners forward a base. Luke Lindsay would score Tuttle on a fly out to center field putting Alma up 2-0.
In the fifth inning, Alma added two more run off of an Avery Carnicom home run over the left field wall scoring Warren who reached earlier in the inning. Grove City was able to get their lone run if the game in the sixth after a double and a base hit following, scoring the base runner. Alma scored their fifth and final run of the day in the eighth inning as Goodpaster reached first on a bunt and then second after an error. Martyn advanced Goodpaster to third on a sacrifice bunt before Warren sent him home on a single to center field, putting the Scots up 5-1.
Carnicom led the Scots with two RBI's off of his homer in the fifth and Mac Hawley and Tuttle went 2-3 and 2-4 at the plate, respectively. Cole Grunwald got the start on the mound for the Scots and went six innings recording three strikeouts and only allowed one earned run. Josh West came in as relief for Grunwald and pitched the final three innings and recorded the save.
Alma will now close out their spring break trip tomorrow, March 1st, as they face off against the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union. The game is set for a 9:30 AM first pitch.
