Women's Basketball Opens MIAA Play With W Over Adrian

Box Score Adrian, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball opened MIAA conference play on Saturday with a trip to Adrian College. The Scots were victorious by a final of 70-58.

After a defensive open to the game, Adrian claimed the first bucket of the contest nearly two minutes in, with Alma answering immediately. The game was a dead heat at 8-8 midway through the quarter, and it was Adrian who managed to open up a small lead at 17-13. The Scots closed well offensively in the period, and narrowed the margin to 19-17.

The teams battled, nearly neck-and-neck in the second frame, with a consistent rhythm of Adrian trying to pull away, and Alma reeling them back in to a one-possession game. Despite never leading, Alma managed to level the game at 28-28 with just under four minutes to play in the half. The Bulldogs took a 1-point lead late, and carried it to the half at 29-28.

It appeared that halftime adjustments would be the name of the game. As Alma game out firing in the third quarter, the Scots ripped off an 8-0 run to take the lead, and never looked back. Alma outscored the hosts in the quarter by a margin of 23-5, and opened up a near 20-point lead in the process. The Scots nailed five threes in the scoring run, and limited Adrian to 2-10 shooting from the floor in the process. It was enough for the visitors to lead 51-34 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Alma controlled the game handily into the closing minutes. With just under 5 minutes remaining, Adrian launched a huge push to get back into the game. Alma weathered the storm, but the Bulldogs were steaming back into things. In the blink of an eye, the visitors lead had been cut from over 20, to just 10. The Scots held on, pulling out the 12-point victory.

Brooke LeRoux (14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists) Emmerson Goodin (13 points, 5 rebounds) and Breckyn Werner (13 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists) were the leaders in the victory.

Alma moves to 1-0 in MIAA play, and looks forward to hosting Calvin University on December 11.
