Grand Rapids, MI – Alma College Football traveled to Grand Rapids Christian High School to take on Calvin University on Saturday. It was a historic first meeting between the Scots and the first-year program in Calvin, who was playing the first homecoming football game in the history of the institution. Alma won the day, rolling to a blowout 73-13 win.
Calvin opened the game with the ball, and stalled after a first down, punting to Alma. The Scots marched 44 yards before stalling out, and Josh Hernandez knocked through a 41 yard field goal to give Alma a 3-0 lead. The Scots defense forced an immediate punt, and the Scots were in the endzone 36 seconds later courtesy of a
Zach Poff 62 yard TD reception from
Carter St. John. The Alma defense went right back to work, forcing another punt, and the Scots went 59 yards in 8-plays to score again with
Eddie Williams punching it in from 4 yards out to lead 16-0.
Calvin's offense finally gained traction on the ensuing drive, but Alma snuffed out the scoring hopes by blocking a field goal attempt by the Knights. After a pair of stalled drives, Alma took advantage of a short field to go 44 yards in 8 plays with
Eddie Williams scoring from 10 yards out to make it 23-0, which is what the scoreline read after the first quarter.
After 3 straight punts, the Scots were in the endzone again after
Ty Lotterman hauled in a beautiful 35 yard jump ball from St. John to make it 29-0. Calvin answered after their running back slipped out of a tackle and went 65 yards to the house to bring the score to 29-6. The Scots had an answer of their own, as Alma needed just 3 plays to go 75 yards, capped by a 35 yard score by
Kahleel Brown, bringing the score to 35-6. Alma poured it on, scoring on a 67-yard pass from St. John to Frenchko, and tacking on a Hernandez field goal at the buzzer. The Scots had racked up a 45-6 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Scots put the ball in the hands of their running backs, and kept running.
Eddie Williams scored on the opening drive of the half from 26 yards out to make the score 52-6. Calvin scored a touchdown of their own to make it 52-13, but the Scots refused to be stopped. Alma scored on a screen pass from St. John to
Jordan Williams, and punched in rushing touchdowns from
John Allen and
Brian Morgan to punctuate the win, with the final reading 73-13.
Carter St. John was 21-31 for 390 yards and 4 touchdowns with no interceptions through the air.
Eddie Williams led all rushers in the game with 105 yards and 3 touchdowns on 13 carries.
Kahleel Brown added 75 yards on 7 attempts.
Zach Poff was the top receiver on the day, hauling in 4 passes for 94 yards and a score.
