Wooster, OH – Alma College Volleyball hit the road once again on Friday, heading down to The College of Wooster to take part in a pod of the MIAA/NCAC Crossover. Alma was dropped by Oberlin 3-1, before powering past Kenyon by the same score later in the evening.
Oberlin 3, Alma 1
Alma opened up against a talented Oberlin squad in the afternoon. It was truly a contest that could have fallen either way. The Scots never truly out of the game, not losing a set by more than 5 points. Oberlin took the opening set 25-20, before scraping out a set 2 win at 26-24 to take a 2-0 advantage. Alma fought back, taking the third set 25-20, before dropping the final set by the narrowest of margins at 26-24 to end the game.
The Scots did well defensively, out-blocking their counterparts 8-6, and holding Oberlin to .140 or less in 3 of 4 sets, and forced the opposition to hit negative in the third set. Alma failed to take advantage of those numbers, as the Oberlin defense forced the Scots to hit difficult shots, causing Alma to never make it over .100 in the game.
Brooke LeRoux led the offense with 16 kills, and
Sienna Sahr snagged 12 kills as well.
Lexi Dykstra recorded 19 assists, and
Vicky Villarosa tossed 15.
Defensively,
Ashlyn Michalski had a monster game at the net, leading the contest in total blocks with 8. Sahr led in digs with a career high 23, and LeRoux dug out 19, followed up by
Kolbey Boyd with 17.
Alma 3, Kenyon 1
In their second game of the day, Alma took on Kenyon. The Scots jumped out to a quick advantage, winning the first set 25-20. The Owls took the second set to level things at 1-all by winning 25-17. It looked as though things were about to get interesting, but the Scots had other plans. Alma took things to another level, and won the final two sets to take the match in convincing fashion.
Alma controlled things in just about every category possible. Alma out-killed the Owls 43-37, and recorded more aces at 9-7, and had more assists (40-34) and more digs (59-51).
Leading the offense was the usual culprits. LeRoux grabbed a game high 13 kills, while Sahr pulled in 11, and
Madison Neu had 9. Boyd recorded 4 aces from the service line. Dykstra (20 assists) and Villarosa (15 assists) split setting once again.
Callie Smith recorded 4 total blocks in the contest, while Boyd led in digs with 17. Dykstra came in with 11, and Sahr with 10.
The Scots are back at it tomorrow with a 10 AM contest against The College of Wooster.
