ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College women's golf team continued their nonconference home stand with a matchup against Madonna University at Scotland Yard. The Scots were defeated by the Crusaders in a game that saw eight total goals scored, with the final outcome being 5-3.
On a cloudy day in Scotland, USA, the offenses shined through and created an action-packed game. Both teams were able to get their offenses kick started in the game as Madonna opened up the scoring 20 minutes into play, putting the Crusaders up 1-0. The Crusaders added another tally just six minutes later on a shot that squeaked by on the right side, giving Madonna a 2-0 lead. Alma's offense broke through shortly after as Paige Kohler found herself down near the right corner as she cut back and found Abigail Dawes just outside the box who set up Jayden Rawlin for a one-timer that was sent towards the top right corner of the net and passed the keeper. Rawlin's first of the season cut the Crusader lead in half with just over ten minutes left in the first half. Madonna would answer back with another tally several minutes later to regain a two-goal lead before adding an insurance goal just a couple minutes before the end of the half. Heading into the break Alma trailed 4-1.
The Scots knew what they had to do in the second half to fight back for a chance to win and found some momentum early on. Just under seven minutes into second half play, Alma found themselves with a throw in in the right corner of the field. Jacqueline Daigneault found Lily Stephan with the throw as Stephan passed through a couple defenders with her dribbles as she found Briana Scillion cutting in front of the net who would end up burying the ball in the back left corner. The Scots early goal cut the deficit in half with just under 40 minutes of gameplay remaining. The Crusaders would slow the momentum and add another score just over ten minutes later to take a three-goal lead again. The Scots would record the final tally of the game as they found themselves with a corner kick at the with eleven minutes remaining in the game. Scillion took the corner kick and placed it right in the middle of the box where Dawes found the ball in her possession as she kicked it in the right side and cut the Madonna lead back down to two. Both teams were held scoreless for the final ten as Madonna walked away from Scotland Yard with a 5-3 victory.
Dawes and Scillion both recorded a goal and an assist in the contest as Rawlin added a goal while Kohler and Stephan recorded an assist. Stephan led the team in shots with four over the game and two on net. Allison Bush made six saves over the game in net for Alma.
Alma will now hit the road for the first time this season as their next game will be against Lawrence Tech in Southfield, Michigan. Game time is set for 4:00 PM.
